The Ringarooma at Moorina
Moorina is the old tin-mining settlement on the Ringarooma River in Tasmania’s north-east, between Derby and Branxholm, where the river runs through forest and farmland on its way north to the sea near Tomahawk. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Moorina supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Ringarooma above Branxholm has its own page.
Species and seasons
Brown trout are the fish of the Ringarooma, in the runs and pools on the fly, small lures and bait. The river follows the Inland Fishing Code’s general river rules, open from the first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April and computed on the species card, with a bag of five fish over 220 mm.
Where to fish it
The crossings and reserves around Moorina and Derby give access to the river, and anglers walk the banks between them.
Planning a visit
Derby, nearby, is a mountain-biking town with cafes and accommodation, and Scottsdale has supplies. Bring light trout gear.
The river through the year
The Ringarooma runs full through the north-eastern winter and rises quickly after heavy rain on the highlands; in April 1929 a flood burst the Briseis Dam above Derby, just upstream of Moorina, and the wall of water killed fourteen people. The trout season opens in August with the river high; from October the trout rise in the runs as the water warms, and summer is the best dry-fly fishing. The old mining country around Moorina and Derby has left its mark on the valley, and the river has recovered from the tailings of a century ago to become good trout water again. Low summer flows make the fish wary, and the early mornings and evenings are the time.
