The lake
Blue Rock Lake is the storage of the Blue Rock Dam on the Tanjil River, north of Moe in the Latrobe Valley of Gippsland, a deep, cool lake in forested hills that supplies the valley and, for anglers, one of the better mixed fisheries within two hours of Melbourne. It is stocked with Australian bass and trout by the Victorian Fisheries Authority and holds redfin and the occasional Macquarie perch, fished from the bank at the dam wall and the reserves and from small boats and kayaks in the arms. Species and seasons
Australian bass are the lake’s summer fish, schooling deep in the warmer months and taken on surface lures at dawn and dusk and on plastics and blades over the schools by day; brown and rainbow trout are the cool-season fish, trolled along the drop-offs and taken from the bank in autumn, winter and spring; redfin school in the arms and the bays all year and are the everyday catch; and Macquarie perch are protected and must go back. The VFA publishes the limits and the stocking, and the lake is a rare water where bass and trout share a season.
