The reach
The Thomson at Walhalla is the river below the Thomson Dam as it runs through the gorge past the old gold town of Walhalla and the Walhalla Goldfields Railway, clear and rocky with pools between rapids, the Coopers Creek camp and the road crossings toward Cowwarr and the Gippsland plains. It is a wild trout river below a closed catchment, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Walhalla supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown and rainbow trout are the fish, wild, in the pools and the runs on the fly and on spinners, under the Victorian stream closure from the Tuesday after the King’s Birthday weekend to the Friday before the first Saturday of September, computed on the species card; blackfish are in the deeper pools under their own rules. The Thomson Dam catchment above is closed to the public.
Where to fish it
The Coopers Creek camp and the crossings give access to the gorge reaches, the railway line follows the river and the walking tracks reach pools the road cannot, and the river is a wader’s water in the runs and the pool heads; dawn and dusk are the trout hours. The dam’s environmental releases keep the river running in summer.
