The reach
The Goulburn at Alexandra is the lower tailrace, thirty kilometres below the Eildon Pondage, where the cold release has warmed a little and the river runs wider through the farmland of the Acheron valley past Alexandra, Molesworth and Yarck toward Trawool, over runs, pools and willows. It is trout water with natives in the deeper pools, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Alexandra supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown and rainbow trout are the fish, in the runs and the pool heads on bait, spinners and the fly, under the VFA tailrace rules that ban all hook and line fishing from the Tuesday after the King’s Birthday weekend to the Friday before the first Saturday of September, computed on the species card; Murray cod and golden perch, stocked into the Goulburn, hold in the deeper pools in summer; redfin and carp are present under the VFA rules.
Where to fish it
The Alexandra bridge, the Molesworth reserve and the road crossings give bank access, drift boats cover the runs from Molesworth to Trawool, and wading is possible on a low release; the runs and the pool heads are the trout water and the deep pools the natives’. The Acheron and the Rubicon, trout streams joining above, have their own rules.
