The Acheron at Taggerty
Taggerty is the small township on the Acheron River under the Cathedral Range, south of Alexandra, where the river runs clear through farmland and forest to the Goulburn. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Taggerty supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Goulburn at Alexandra and Lake Eildon have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Brown and rainbow trout are the fish of the Acheron at Taggerty, in the runs and pools on the fly, lures and bait, with river blackfish in the snags. Victoria’s river trout closure, the Tuesday after the King’s Birthday weekend to the Friday before the first Saturday in September, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The crossings and the reserves near Taggerty give access to the Acheron, and the Cathedral Range State Park camping areas are close by. Much of the river frontage is private, so stay on public land. The pools below the Taggerty bridge hold the bigger browns, and the faster water upstream toward Buxton suits a small nymph or a spinner cast across the current; blackfish come out of the snags as the light goes. Spring and autumn are the best months for trout on the Acheron.

Taggerty is on the Maroondah Highway between Buxton and Alexandra, and Alexandra and Marysville have supplies and accommodation. Bring light trout gear, and combine the Acheron with a session on the Goulburn at Alexandra or Lake Eildon nearby.
