The reach
The Kiewa at Mongans Bridge is the river in the middle of the Kiewa valley, below the hydro tailrace at Mount Beauty and above the Kiewa and Tangambalanga reaches, running fast and clear over gravel and rock through dairy flats under the Bogong High Plains, with the bridge, the reserves and the Kiewa Valley Highway beside it. It is a trout stream of the north-east, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Mongans Bridge supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown and rainbow trout are the fish, wild and stocked, in the runs and the pool heads on spinners, bait and the fly, under the Victorian stream closure from the Tuesday after the King’s Birthday weekend to the Friday before the first Saturday of September, computed on the species card; the tailrace reach below Rocky Valley Dam near Mount Beauty carries the VFA’s total ban in the closed season, which the Kiewa page for that reach would note. Murray cod and golden perch reach the lower river; redfin and carp are present.
