The reach
The Ovens at Bright is the river as it leaves the alps below Mount Buffalo and Mount Feathertop, clear and fast over gravel and rock through the town’s parks and the Centenary Park swimming hole, past Porepunkah and the Buckland junction toward Myrtleford, with the Great Alpine Road beside it. It is a trout stream with a 25 cm minimum upstream of Porepunkah under the VFA rules, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Bright supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown and rainbow trout are the fish, wild and stocked, in the runs and the pools on spinners, bait and the fly, with the river a Victorian stream closed from the Tuesday after the King’s Birthday weekend to the Friday before the first Saturday of September, computed on the species card, and the 25 cm minimum and a bag of three upstream of Porepunkah; redfin and carp are few this high. Murray cod are stocked far downstream, not here.

The town parks, Centenary Park and the road crossings give bank access, and the river is a wader’s water: the runs and the pool heads from Bright down through Porepunkah to the Buckland junction, fished on foot with a rod and a pair of boots.
