Fishing Laanecoorie Reservoir: the full guide
The lake
Laanecoorie Reservoir is the Goulburn-Murray Water storage on the Loddon River between Maldon and Dunolly in central Victoria, downstream of Cairn Curran, a broad, shallow lake of open shores, drowned timber and a foreshore camping reserve that fills from the bigger storage above and draws down for the Loddon irrigators. It is warmer and shallower than Cairn Curran, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge on the reservoir supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod are stocked and are on the VFA’s list of lakes with a bag of two, fished in the timber and along the walls in the warm months and closed from 1 September to 30 November under the Victorian rule the species card computes; golden perch fish the same structure from spring to autumn on lures and bait; redfin are abundant through the year; and carp are numerous with the VFA rules. Trout are not the fishery here.
Where to fish it
The foreshore camping reserve and the ramp on the eastern shore give bank and boat access, and the drowned timber toward the inflow is the cod and perch water in the warm months, best from a boat or a kayak; the deeper water near the weir holds the fish through the summer draw-down and fishes from the bank near the wall.
