Bremer Bay and the estuary
Bremer Bay is the small town on the south coast between Albany and Esperance at the mouth of the Wellstead Estuary, with the estuary’s flats behind the town, the sheltered bay and its ramp, the beaches and the granite headlands of the Fitzgerald River National Park to the east and the Bremer Canyon offshore that the orca boats go to. It is a bay town on a remote coast, and the report on this page is scored for the town’s coordinates. Albany and Esperance have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Australian salmon run the beaches and the headlands in autumn, big ones, and are the coast’s fish; herring and garfish fish the bay and the beaches all year; black bream fish the Wellstead Estuary; King George whiting fish the bay sand in summer; squid work the bay weed; skippy and sweep fill the granite; tailor run the beaches in the cooler months; and the reef gives dhufish and snapper for the boats, under the West Coast demersal closure where it applies and the south coast rules where it does not. Mulloway are taken at the estuary mouth at night.
Where to fish it
The town beach and the ramp on the bay are the herring, whiting and squid water for wading and small boats on the calm mornings, and the Wellstead Estuary behind the town is the bream water for kayaks and the banks; the beaches of the national park east of the town at Point Ann and Fitzgerald Inlet are the salmon sand, four-wheel drive from the road ends, and the granite of Point Henry is the exposed rock. The ramp is at the town.
