Fishing Erieau: the full guide
Fishing Erieau
Erieau is a village on a narrow spit of sand at the mouth of Rondeau Bay, south of Chatham in Chatham-Kent, with the lake on one side, the bay on the other and Rondeau Provincial Park across the water. Its harbour, protected by long piers, has served commercial fishing boats for generations and now also launches sport boats heading out after walleye and perch. There is no live public level gauge used on this page: Lake Erie’s levels are published by the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The report here is built from the weather and the season.
Species and seasons
Walleye are the summer fish, trolled with crawler harnesses and crankbaits over the open basin once they move out from their spring spawning areas; yellow perch are fished on the bottom in spring and again in the fall, often in big schools. Rondeau Bay, shallow and weedy, holds largemouth bass, northern pike and panfish. The seasons and limits of the Lake Erie zone are in Ontario’s regulations summary.
Where to fish it
From the harbour, boats run south and west into the open lake, following the walleye schools as the summer goes on; the long piers at the harbour mouth are a shore spot for perch and the occasional walleye. On the bay side, the marshes of Rondeau are fished from small boats and kayaks.
Planning a visit
Erieau is about twenty minutes from Chatham and around an hour and a half from Windsor or London, with a marina, a launch and a handful of services in the village. Rondeau Provincial Park, across the bay, has camping and trails through old Carolinian forest.
Wind on the western basin
This end of Lake Erie is shallow, and a strong wind from the southwest or northeast can raise steep, short waves within an hour and push the water level up or down along the shore. Watch the marine forecast, and come back in early if it builds.
