Fishing Port Glasgow
Port Glasgow is a small community in the municipality of West Elgin, on the north shore of Lake Erie between Rondeau and Port Stanley, where a creek mouth has been turned into a marina with a pier and a sandy beach beside it. It is a quieter harbour than the bigger ports to the west, and its fishing is the central basin of the lake. There is no live public level gauge used here; the lake’s levels are published by the Canadian Hydrographic Service, and the report on this page is built from the weather and the season.
Species and seasons
Yellow perch are what most people come for, in the spring and again in the fall, when the schools move within reach of small boats and the pier. Walleye are trolled farther out in summer, and smallmouth bass hold on the harder bottom and rock. The Lake Erie zone’s seasons and limits are set out in Ontario’s regulations summary.
Where to fish it
The marina gives small boats a way into the lake on calm days, and the pier, running out beside the harbour entrance, is fished for perch with minnows and small jigs. Farther out, the walleye trollers work the open water of the central basin.
Planning a visit
Port Glasgow is about an hour west of London and forty minutes from St. Thomas, reached along the county roads through farmland. The beach and the small park next to the marina are busy on summer weekends, and services in the village are limited.
The central basin
Lake Erie’s central basin is deeper and a little cooler than the western end near Point Pelee, and it warms later in spring; the perch runs follow the water temperature, which is why spring and fall are the best times at Port Glasgow.
