Long Point Bay
Long Point is the long sand spit that reaches into Lake Erie from Norfolk County, sheltering the bay behind it, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve known for its marshes and migrating birds. The inner bay, between Port Rowan, St. Williams and Turkey Point, is shallow and weedy; the outer bay opens to the lake. Its fishing is perch, bass and, in winter, ice fishing on the inner bay. There is no live public level gauge for the bay here; the report is built from the weather and the season.
Species and seasons
Yellow perch are the most searched fish, in open water and through the ice; smallmouth bass on the rock and sand of the outer bay and largemouth bass in the weeds of the inner bay open in summer; northern pike, walleye and panfish are present. Ontario’s zone seasons and limits apply.
Where to fish it
The inner bay off Port Rowan and St. Williams is the ice-fishing and weed-bass water; the outer bay and the lake off Turkey Point are fished for perch and smallmouth from boats. Launches at Port Rowan and Turkey Point give access.
Planning a visit
Port Rowan and Turkey Point are about two hours southwest of Toronto. The marshes are protected areas with their own rules, and the bird migrations in spring and fall bring many visitors.
Ice and seasons
The shallow inner bay freezes in cold winters and is fished through the ice, but Lake Erie’s ice changes with wind and temperature: no agency certifies it, and the outer bay can open without warning. In open water, summer and fall are the main seasons.
