Fishing Wheatley
Wheatley is the harbour town on the north shore of Lake Erie between Leamington and Erieau, next to Wheatley Provincial Park and a short drive from Point Pelee National Park, the southernmost point of mainland Canada. Its harbour is home to a large commercial fishing fleet and a fish-processing industry, and sport boats share it on their way into the western basin. There is no live public level gauge used on this page; the report is built from the weather and the season.
Species and seasons
Walleye move through the western basin in spring after spawning and are trolled through the summer; yellow perch are the spring and fall fishery; smallmouth bass hold on the rocky shoals. Where to fish it
Boats leave the harbour for the waters toward Point Pelee and the Pelee Island shoals, well known for walleye and perch. Shore fishing is limited to the harbour area and the provincial park’s shoreline, where the rules allow it.
Planning a visit
Wheatley is about an hour from Windsor, and Leamington, just to the west, is the ferry port for Pelee Island. Point Pelee draws crowds during the spring bird migration in May, when the fishing and the birding seasons overlap.

The western basin is the shallowest and warmest part of the Great Lakes, and it warms fast in spring; that warmth makes it one of the most productive walleye waters on the continent, and it also means that algae blooms can colour the water in late summer.
