Trout Season in Pennsylvania

All 2 rules PFBC publishes for trout in Pennsylvania, read on 2026-09-14, with the calendar underneath and what it means on the day.

Pennsylvania runs the biggest opening day in American fishing, and it is written as a rule rather than a date: 8 a.m. on the first Saturday in April.

Open today by the rules below, worked out for 2026 rather than copied from a chart.

The regulation reads "8 a.m. on the first Saturday in April, to midnight, Labor Day", which is why the date moves: April 5 in 2025, April 4 in 2026. Anglers 16 and over need a trout permit on top of the licence, and that catches people out more often than the date does.

After Labor Day the season does not end, it changes gear: from September 8, 2026 to February 15, 2027 the water stays open with the daily limit cut from five to three. Most people who put the rod away in September do not know this exists.

Limit
3 trout a day.

Read on 2026-09-14 from Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Legal dates were read on the agency’s own page on the date shown beside each entry. Seasons change: the agency link is always the last word.

Why Pennsylvania is different

That wording is why the date moves β€” April 5 in 2025, April 4 in 2026, April 3 in 2027 β€” and why every chart that hardcodes it is wrong four years out of five. The regular season runs to midnight on Labor Day at five trout a day, nothing under seven inches.

What to actually do

The part most people never find out about is that the season does not end in September. An extended season runs from September 8, 2026 to February 15, 2027 with the daily limit cut from five to three, which means the water is legally open for trout more than ten months of the year. Anglers 16 and over need a trout permit on top of the fishing licence, and that catches more people out on opening morning than the start time does.

The activity row in the calendar above is our own monthly curve for this species, and it is there to answer the question the dates cannot: whether the fish will be feeding when the season lets you fish. How rainbow trout behave through the year is a separate page, about the fish rather than the paperwork.

Where to fish it

Questions

When is the Pennsylvania trout opener?

8 a.m. on the first Saturday in April β€” April 4 in 2026 β€” running to midnight on Labor Day. The rule is a weekday, so the date changes every year.

Can I fish for trout in Pennsylvania after Labor Day?

Yes. An extended season runs from early September to mid-February with a reduced daily limit of three trout. Most people put the rod away without knowing it exists.
