The PA Alley distilled

Walnut Creek is Pennsylvania steelheading in one stream: a short shale run from Lake Erie loaded October-April with the state's hatchery-powered returns: the densest steelhead runs per mile in the lower 48 by many counts. The 'Project Waters' access (PFBC-secured public reaches) makes it the Alley's most democratic fishery.

The program

Fall rains trigger waves of fresh fish (the Manchester Hole and the wall pools stack silver), winter holds pods in every deep bend (fish the thaws), and spring's drop-backs feed greedily before returning to the lake. Single eggs, sacs and beads under floats dominate: white jigs and small spoons convert the aggressive fresh runs.

Access and the wall

The creek's mouth: Walnut Creek Access's marina wall: hosts the famous (and infamous) combat scene when fish stage: inside, the Project Waters reaches spread anglers through Fairview's bends. Etiquette carries the fishery: space at the pools, rotate the runs, and let moving fish move: 200,000 annual smolts mean there are always more coming.
