The Michigan trout opener is the last Saturday in April and it applies to a minority of the state’s trout water. The rest is either open all year or on its own dates, and which one you are standing in is not obvious from the bank.

Type 1 and 2 streams
The traditional statewide trout opener. Type 3 and 4 streams and several lake types are open all year instead, so “trout season” in Michigan depends entirely on which water you are standing in. The DNR publishes an interactive map for exactly this reason.

Why Michigan is different
Michigan classifies trout water by type. Type 1 and Type 2 streams run from the last Saturday in April to September 30 — that is the traditional opener. Type 3 and Type 4 streams and several lake classifications are open for the entire year instead. The DNR publishes an interactive map precisely because the classification cannot be worked out from the water itself, and getting it wrong in either direction is easy: fishing a closed stream in March, or staying home in March from a stream that was open.
What to actually do
Check the stream type before the date. The 2026 opener fell on April 25 and the 2027 opener falls on April 24, because the rule is a weekday and not a date. Inland trout regulations were also updated recently, so a digest from two seasons ago is not a safe guide even for the classification.
