Georgia WRD's guide to the lower Flint describes shoal bass as fish of swift current and pocket water near rocky shoals, endemic to the Flint, Chattahoochee and Apalachicola river systems. Upson County, which runs Sprewell Bluff Park, calls the shoal bass Georgia's official riverine sport fish and says the park's shoals let anglers wade the river with ease.

The county park at 700 Sprewell Bluff Road, Thomaston, has a boat ramp in its day-use area, more than 12 miles of trails and the River Ridge Campground, and is open from 7 a.m. to dark.
