Fishing Lake Harding: the full guide

A border reservoir

Lake Harding, known locally as Bartletts Ferry, impounds 5,850 acres of the Chattahoochee River along the Georgia-Alabama line north of Columbus. It is a Georgia Power lake with heavy shoreline development, thousands of docks and current running through it whenever the dams generate. Spotted bass dominate the rock and current seams, with largemouth on the docks, stripers and hybrids in the deeper channel and crappie in the brush.

Fishing the current

Generation drives the bite: when water moves, spotted bass position on the current-swept points, riprap and bridge pilings, taking shaky heads, jerkbaits and small crankbaits. Largemouth hold the docks and the backs of the creeks: skipping jigs and wacky rigs is the reliable pattern. Winter pushes fish deeper onto the channel ledges where a spoon or jig gets bit.

Stripers and panfish

Striped bass and hybrids ride the river channel and stack below the upstream dam, taking live shad and big swimbaits, best in cooler months and at first light in summer. Crappie fill the planted brush and dock structure, with spring and fall the productive windows. Catfish work the flats and channel drops through the warm months.

Columbus-area logistics

Public ramps at Blanton Creek Park, Idle Hour Park and several Georgia Power access areas serve the lake. Summer weekends bring heavy recreational traffic given the developed shoreline: fish the current periods, the early mornings or the upper end. Columbus and LaGrange supply everything, and the whitewater park on the Chattahoochee downtown is worth a look.
