Today's Fishing Report

Generated this morning from live readings: gauge, weather model, sun and moon. A fresh report is published here every morning.

3/5Fair. Fish the windows.A steady pattern: dawn and dusk carry the day.

Kahului Harbor sits in the sweet spot of the season: active fish and workable weather. Today brings clear skies, wind E around 7 mph, steady pressure near 1012 hPa and a high of 81. Tides: high 2:25 AM and 2:40 PM, low 8:19 AM and 8:55 PM: the moving water either side of each change is when this place feeds. Water sits around 80 F for the season (estimated). With the new moon, the solunar majors run 11:32 PM-1:32 AM and 11:32 AM-1:32 PM: the windows to build the day around.

The plan, species by species

Giant trevally (ulua)Excellent

Work current-swept points and channel mouths on the moving tide: GTs patrol where reef meets flow. Heavy tackle is respect, not caution: the first run decides everything.

Mahi-mahi (dorado)Good

Troll rigged ballyhoo and small lures along color changes and temperature breaks: schools ride the edges. Birds working low usually mean mahi pushing bait.

Tomorrow: Similar at 80 F. The solunar majors shift about 50 minutes later.Next report: Sat, Sep 12, 6:30 AMHow this report is made →

Giant trevally (ulua) illustration

Giant trevally (ulua)

Best: summer moons, big tides

The reef's apex bully: Hawaii's ulua, a hundred pounds of shoulder that eats poppers like personal insults. Work current-swept points and channel mouths on the moving tide: GTs patrol where reef meets flow. Heavy tackle is respect, not caution: the first run decides everything.

Mahi-mahi (dorado) illustration

Mahi-mahi (dorado)

Best: summer weedline runs

The ocean's fastest-growing gamefish: neon gold-and-green acrobats stacked under anything that floats. Troll rigged ballyhoo and small lures along color changes and temperature breaks: schools ride the edges. Birds working low usually mean mahi pushing bait.

License

Hawaii requires a valid fishing license for adults. Buy online from the state agency; one-day options exist for visitors.

Regulations

No license required for recreational shore fishing in Hawaii, but size, season and area rules apply to many species: check current DAR regulations.

Access

Kahului Harbor beach park, breakwater areas and Kanaha Beach Park on Maui’s north shore.

About this water

Maui’s main commercial harbor on the north shore at Kahului, Maui County, Hawaii.

Fishing Kahului Harbor: the full guide

A commercial harbor on the north shore

Kahului Harbor is Maui’s main commercial port, on the island’s north shore beside the airport and the town of Kahului. Two long breakwaters shelter the harbor, and those structures, along with the adjacent beaches and the river mouths, hold papio, ulua, goatfish, bonefish on the flats and a range of reef species within easy reach of town.

Fishing the breakwaters

The breakwaters are the productive shore ground: whipping lures along the rocks for papio, slide-bait rigs and heavy tackle for ulua at night, and bottom rigs for goatfish and reef fish. Work the harbor mouth on moving water, and fish the changes of light. Footing on the rocks is uneven and the surge is real: move carefully.

Flats and river mouths

The shallow sandy areas inside the harbor and at Kanaha hold bonefish, sight-fished on the flats with fly and light spinning tackle. The stream mouths draw fish after rain pushes food into the bay. North shore surf can be very large in winter, which shuts down the exposed water and pushes fishing inside the harbor.

Maui logistics

Access is via Kahului Harbor beach park, the breakwater areas and Kanaha Beach Park, with parking and facilities and the airport minutes away. Commercial and cruise traffic uses the harbor: respect posted port restrictions. Wind on this coast is famously strong, which is why the windsurfers are here in numbers.

Common questions

Are there bonefish?

Yes: the shallow sandy flats inside the harbor and at Kanaha hold oio, sight-fished with fly or light spinning gear.

Is it windy?

Famously: this coast is a windsurfing centre for a reason. Plan around the forecast, especially for the flats.

When is winter fishing?

North shore surf can be huge in winter, which pushes fishing inside the sheltered harbor.
