About this water

6,000 shallow acres at 6,470 ft, Fremont County, ID. The trophy stillwater of Island Park.

Fishing Henrys Lake: the full guide

The shallow giant factory

Henrys spreads shallow and absurdly fertile at 6,470 feet: scud and leech soup growing cutthroat, brook trout and the famous cutbow hybrids at rates that make 20-inch fish ordinary and 10-pounders annual. It may be America's best public stillwater for a legitimate trophy on flies: and it looks like a puddle doing it.

Stillwater craft

The lake fishes like a giant spring creek: strip leeches and scuds along the weed channels, hang chironomids at the springs, and watch for the cruising wakes that mean hybrids hunting. Classic beats: the State Park flats, Staley's Springs' cold seams, the Cliffs' drop: all worked from tubes and small boats at dawn before the wind.

Brookies of consequence

Henrys grows the country's biggest public-water brook trout: 3-5-lb fish with 7s possible: fall's spawn colors turn them into paintings. October's pre-ice weeks concentrate them at the springs and creek mouths: the lake's most beautiful fishing in its most brutal weather.

Rules of the bowl

The season opens late May and closes with ice (check IDFG dates); limits protect the hybrids; and afternoon wind is a scheduled event: fish 6-11 AM, respect the whitecaps. Island Park's services sit minutes away: pair Henrys with the Henrys Fork and Yellowstone's west side for the region's grand slam.

Common questions

How big do Henrys Lake trout run?

Averages start at 18 inches: hybrids past 10 lb come every season. It is trophy water by design: heavy tippet and big nets are standard.

When does Henrys Lake fish best?

Opener weeks (late May-June) and October's cold finale: mornings always. The wind owns afternoons: plan around it like the locals.
