The Henrys Fork of the Snake is where technical dry-fly fishing reached its final form: the Railroad Ranch's glassy spring-creek flats hold huge, educated rainbows that inspect every leader and refuse most. Around that famous water sits a remarkably varied river: canyon pocket water, tailwater below Island Park Dam, and cottonwood freestone down at Ashton.

A river of chapters

Box Canyon: nymphing heavy pocket water for the river's strongest fish. The Ranch (opens June 15): green drakes, PMDs, flat water and humility. Warm River to Ashton: friendly attractor-dry water perfect for learning. Fall brings streamers and baetis; winter midging below the dam is a local secret. The Railroad Ranch examination

The Harriman 'Ranch' section is dry-fly fishing's final exam: flat, slick spring-creek water where 20-inch rainbows inspect a green drake for ten seconds before the verdict. June's drake emergence is the celebrated date, but the Ranch rewards all-season craft: downstream reach casts, 14-ft leaders, and acceptance of refusal. Graduate school is a river in Idaho.
