A river through wilderness

The Salmon River runs 425 miles across Idaho, the longest river contained within a single state and the heart of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Steelhead and chinook salmon travel over 800 miles from the Pacific to reach it, and the river also holds westslope cutthroat, rainbow trout, whitefish and, in the lower reaches, smallmouth bass.

Steelhead seasons

The steelhead fishery is the draw: B-run fish, some over twenty pounds, arrive in fall and hold through winter and into spring. Anglers fish the classic runs from Riggins to Salmon with jigs, bait and swung flies, with the Riggins area the most accessible and popular. Seasons and limits depend on run size and are announced annually.

Chinook and trout

Spring chinook return in May and June when returns allow a season, a tightly regulated fishery that draws crowds to the lower river. Westslope cutthroat and rainbows hold the upper river and tributaries, providing excellent summer dry-fly fishing in wilderness settings reached by road, raft or trail.

Idaho logistics

Highway 95 and the Salmon River Road provide access at Riggins, Whitebird and upstream toward Salmon, with numerous bank spots, boat ramps and guide services. The wilderness reaches are floated on multi-day permits. Weather and flows vary enormously: spring runoff makes much of the river unfishable until it drops.
