Fishing Rapid River: the full guide

A short river with a long reputation

The Rapid River runs about four miles from Middle Dam on Lower Richardson Lake down to Umbagog Lake on the Maine-New Hampshire line, and it holds what many consider the finest wild brook trout population in the eastern United States: fish that regularly reach 14 to 18 inches, sustained entirely by natural reproduction in cold, oxygen-rich water. Landlocked salmon share the river, and the whole fishery is protected by fly-fishing-only, catch-and-release regulations.

Reading pocket water

The river earns its name: heavy pocket water, ledge drops and boulder gardens with pools like Smooth Ledge, Chub Pool and Long Pool holding fish. Standard tactics are streamers swung and stripped through the deeper slots, nymphs drifted along the boulder seams, and dry flies in the softer water during summer hatches. The trout are wild and strong, and the salmon that push up from Umbagog add unpredictability to every hookup.

Flows and season

Dam releases from Middle Dam control the river and are managed with the fishery in mind: check current flows before hiking in, since high water changes wading dramatically. June and September are the classic windows, with summer fishable thanks to the cold lake-bottom releases. Even in August the water stays in the trout range, which is precisely why this river matters in a warming region.

Getting there

Access is deliberately difficult: no paved road reaches the river. Anglers arrive by boat across Richardson Lake to Middle Dam, by boat across Umbagog to the lower end, or on foot along the Carry Road, a several-mile walk from the nearest gate. Lakewood Camps at Middle Dam is the historic sporting lodge serving the water. The effort is the fishery’s protection: solitude is part of the experience.
