Behind the dunes

Hamlin backs up behind Ludington's dunes: 5,000 acres split into Upper and Lower basins by the narrows, fed by the Big Sable River through state-park pines. The setting (Sable dunes west, forest east) frames a classic mixed fishery: walleye, pike of size, bass in the bayous, and panfish that carry generations of cottage mornings.
