The everything river

The Muskegon below Croton Dam may be Michigan's most complete fishery: fall kings, winter-through-spring steelhead, resident brown-and-rainbow fishing all summer, plus a genuine walleye run each March. Stable dam-fed flows and gravel-rich water keep it fishable when weather wrecks the freestones: the guide fleet works it 12 months.

Steelhead the Muskegon way

Chrome enters from October and stacks all winter: the gravel from Croton to Newaygo fills by March. Float-fishing beads and eggs under bobbers dominates; back-trolled plugs move winter fish; spey anglers swing the tailouts with growing tradition. Spring's drop-back bite (post-spawn fish feeding hard) is the sleeper: April's best days rival anything.

Salmon and the September show

Kings stack the lower gravel from late August: fresh fish in the deep bends taken on skein and plugs, then the spawning theater above Newaygo. The run brings crowds: fish edges and odd hours: and feeds the ecosystem's egg-drift economy that fattens everything else.

Resident water, legitimately good

Summer's underrated season: browns and rainbows on hex and iso hatches (June-July nights), smallmouth in the lower river's rock, and trout-stream tactics on a river big enough to float. The Muskegon's resident fishery would headline most states: here it is the quiet between runs.
