Fishing Betsie River: the full guide

A short river that punches up

The Betsie runs just over fifty miles from the Green Lake outlet to Betsie Bay at Frankfort, and its lower half is one of northwest Michigan’s most productive migratory reaches: no dams below Homestead, gravel everywhere, and Lake Michigan close enough that every fall rain restocks the pools. Kings arrive in late August, coho behind them, and steelhead trickle in from October and hold through April: a seven-month migratory season on a river you can wade across.

The salmon rush

September is the show: king salmon stack the gravel from the Homestead Dam area downstream, and the crowd forecast matches the fish forecast. Fresh fish eat skein under a float, crank plugs in the deeper bends, and thundersticks at first light near the bay. Move away from the dam pools mid-month: the river’s middle mileage holds fresher, meaner fish and half the anglers.

Steelhead season

From the first hard October rains through the April spawn, the Betsie is a steelhead river: beads and egg flies behind spawning salmon in fall, then slow winter drifts with spawn bags, jigs and stoneflies through the deep clay-lined bends. It runs small and reads easily: perfect float and drift water for anglers learning lake-run fish. Flows are rain-driven: after a blowout the river fishes best on the second and third day of the drop.

Working Benzie County

Access threads the whole lower river: Homestead Dam (barrier-free access and the busiest water), River Road pulloffs, the Psutka Road and Grace Road bridges, and the mouth at Frankfort for surf and pier fishing when fish stage in the bay. Canoe liveries run the upper river’s brook trout water in summer: the migratory reach is walk-in wading. Frankfort makes the base: harbor town, fall color, fish everywhere.

Is winter steelheading realistic?

Yes: the Betsie holds fish all winter. Pick mild afternoons, fish slow and deep, and you will often have the river to yourself.

How crowded does it get?

Homestead Dam in September is shoulder-to-shoulder: walk twenty minutes downstream or fish weekdays and the river feels wild again.
