Michigan treats Lake Charlevoix, including Round Lake, as a drowned river mouth lake (Type F): a lake-like area of a river where it enters the Great Lakes. Under the 2026 Michigan Fishing Regulations the lake is open all year for trout and salmon, and an angler may keep 5 trout and salmon in any combination, no more than 3 of one species except up to 5 Coho or Chinook salmon, each at least 10 inches. On Type F lakes it is unlawful to fish with a weight suspended below a multi-pointed hook or a single hook wider than 1/2 inch between point and shank.

The Pine River Channel

At Charlevoix the Pine River Channel links Round Lake and Lake Charlevoix to Lake Michigan. In its June 11, 2025 fishing report the DNR noted cisco, lake trout and walleye caught along the channel, with the North Pier and the walkway by the ferry docks named as productive spots, and smallmouth bass caught in 7 to 14 feet of water.

Launch sites

The DNR administers the Ironton boating access site on Lake Charlevoix. It was rebuilt in 2019 with a barrier-free ramp, repaved parking and walkways and new drainage.
