The blue lake

Torch Lake stretches 19 miles through Antrim County, Michigan’s longest inland lake and, at nearly 300 feet, one of its deepest. The sand bottom and extraordinary clarity give it a turquoise color that draws photographers and swimmers, while beneath the postcard lies a serious coldwater fishery: lake trout, brown trout and rainbows in the deep basin, lake whitefish, smallmouth bass on the drop-offs and jumbo perch on the flats.

Deep and clear

Lake trout hold in the main basin and take trolled spoons and jigged tubes at 80-150 feet through summer, coming shallower after ice-out and in fall. Whitefish are a local specialty, caught jigging small spoons and tear-drops over deep flats, especially through the ice. Brown trout and rainbows work the shallower shelves in spring, catchable by trolling stickbaits along the drop-offs.

Smallmouth in gin

Smallmouth hold on the sand and rock transitions and the sharp drop-offs that ring the lake. Clarity makes them difficult in bright conditions: fish dawn, dusk and wind, use light fluorocarbon and natural colors, and make longer casts than feel necessary. The connected Chain of Lakes through Elk River offers alternatives when Torch is calm and glassy.

Antrim County logistics

Public launches at the north end near Torch River and at Alden serve the lake, with limited shoreline access given heavy private development. Summer brings a large recreational fleet and the famous sandbar party scene: fish early or in the shoulder seasons. Ice fishing for whitefish and perch is a serious local tradition when conditions permit.
