Two arms of big water

Grand Traverse Bay reaches 32 miles into northern Michigan from Lake Michigan, split by the Old Mission Peninsula into East and West arms. The water is famously clear, the depths reach 600 feet, and the fishery is a Great Lakes sampler: lake trout in numbers, Chinook and coho salmon in season, brown trout and steelhead along the shorelines, plus a smallmouth bass population that ranks among the best in the country.

Salmon and trout

Lake trout are the year-round backbone: troll spoons and dodger-fly rigs near bottom in 80-150 feet, or jig them over the deep structure. Salmon arrive in summer, chasing alewives in the upper water column and staging near the river mouths by late August. Brown trout and steelhead work the shorelines in spring and fall, catchable by trolling shallow or casting from piers and beaches.

Smallmouth on the flats

The bay’s smallmouth fishing is genuinely world class: sand and rock flats in 5-20 feet hold big fish, and the water clarity makes sight-fishing possible in early summer. Tubes, drop-shots and jerkbaits produce, with the pre-spawn and post-spawn periods offering the best shots at four- and five-pound fish. Respect the seasonal catch-and-release rules that protect spawning bass.

Ramps at Elmwood Marina, Traverse City, Suttons Bay and Elk Rapids serve both arms, with charter fleets working the salmon and lake trout. The bay is big water: wind builds fast and the clarity hides how far offshore you have drifted. Traverse City provides every amenity, and the surrounding wine and cherry country makes for an easy non-fishing day.
