Branched Oak Lake covers about 1,800 acres northwest of Lincoln, the largest of the Salt Valley flood-control lakes built around Nebraska’s capital. It is the region’s main fishing water: walleye, wipers, channel catfish, crappie, largemouth bass and bluegill, supported by active state management and heavy stocking given the urban demand.

Walleye hold the points, riprap and the deeper flats: jigs and live bait in spring, trolled crawler harnesses through summer, with low light best. Wipers school over open water chasing shad and provide the hardest fights on the lake, exploding on the surface at dawn in summer: slabs and swimbaits get destroyed when you find them.

Crappie and catfish

Crappie stack the brush piles, riprap and the marina area, with spring and fall the productive windows. Channel catfish are abundant and reliable from the bank, and the lake has produced large flatheads as well. Bank access is extensive, making this a genuine option for anglers without boats.
