Fishing Platte River: the full guide

A mile wide and an inch deep

The Platte River crosses Nebraska from the confluence of its North and South forks at North Platte to the Missouri River below Louisville, a famously broad, shallow, braided sand river. It holds channel and flathead catfish, white bass, freshwater drum, smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye and sauger, with the lower reaches fishing best.

Catfish and white bass

Channel catfish are everywhere in the sand channels and the deeper outside bends, taken on cut bait, worms and prepared baits. Flatheads hold the log jams and the deepest holes and take live bait at night. White bass and wipers move up from the Missouri and the reservoirs in spring, schooling at the current seams.

Reading a sand river

The braided channel means holes and bars move with every high water, so last year’s spot may be dry ground. Look for the outside of bends, log jams, bridge scour and any place the channel narrows and deepens. Wading the sand is straightforward but currents cut unexpectedly deep: probe before you commit.

Cass County logistics

Access at the lower end is via Louisville, Two Rivers and Schramm state recreation areas, plus public bridge crossings through the corridor, with Omaha and Lincoln both close. The river is famous for the spring sandhill crane migration further west near Kearney, which draws visitors from around the world.
