A Loup valley reservoir

Sherman Reservoir covers about 2,800 acres northeast of Loup City in central Nebraska, an irrigation storage lake with an irregular shoreline of coves, points and creek arms that gives it far more fishable structure than its size suggests. Walleye lead the fishery, joined by wipers, white bass, crappie, largemouth bass and channel catfish.

Walleye and wipers

Walleye hold the rocky points, riprap and flats: jigs in spring, trolled crawler harnesses and crankbaits through summer, and a strong fall bite on the points. Wipers school over open water chasing shad and provide the lake’s hardest fights, best located by watching for surface activity at dawn in summer and fall.

Crappie and the coves

The many coves hold crappie around brush and submerged cover, with spring the peak and fall producing well. Largemouth bass relate to the same cover. Channel catfish are abundant and easy from the bank. The irregular shoreline means there is almost always a protected cove to fish when the Nebraska wind is up.

Sherman Reservoir State Recreation Area provides ramps, camping and shoreline access at several points around the lake. Loup City is minutes away with basic services.
