Republican River water

Harlan County Lake covers 13,000 acres on the Republican River in south-central Nebraska, near the Kansas line. It is one of the region’s premier fisheries: walleye in numbers and size, wipers that pull hard, white bass, crappie and channel catfish, all in a fertile prairie reservoir with extensive flats and rocky points. Anglers come from Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado and beyond for the walleye alone.

Walleye by season

Spring finds walleye on the rocky shorelines, riprap and near the river inflow: jigs tipped with minnows at dusk. Summer spreads them across the main-lake flats at 12-25 feet, where bottom bouncers and crawler harnesses trolled slowly are the standard method. Fall brings a strong jig bite on the points, and winter ice fishing produces when conditions allow.

Wipers and white bass

Wipers school aggressively over the open water and along the dam, chasing shad and providing spectacular surface action in summer and fall. White bass do the same in bigger numbers and smaller sizes. Both are found by watching for birds and boils, then covered with slabs, swimbaits and topwater. Crappie hold the brush and rock, and catfish work the flats through summer.
