Steelhead through the suburbs

The Chagrin drops through Cleveland’s eastern suburbs in a series of shale gorges and waterfall towns to Lake Erie at Eastlake, and from October through April it is one of steelhead alley’s workhorses: strong Manistee returns, plentiful public water in the Cleveland Metroparks and village parks, and enough size (the river runs bigger than the Vermilion) to hold fish through dry spells that pinch the smaller streams.

Reading the big pools

The lower river (Daniels Park, Todd Field, the Eastlake mouth) fishes first each fall: fresh chrome on spawn sacs, jig-and-maggot and swung streamers whenever the gauge drops below about 350 cfs with visibility. Winter fish pod up in the deep bends through Willoughby and Gates Mills: slow bead drifts. Spring scatters spawners onto gravel river-wide, with the South Chagrin and Aurora branch reaches fishing like small-stream sight water.

Falls, and what they mean

Chagrin Falls’ namesake cascade blocks most fish: concentrate below it. Daniels Park dam in Willoughby slows but passes fish: the pools below it are winter magnets. Summer turns the river over to smallmouth and rock bass through the metropark riffles: an honest warm-water fishery nobody drives past Erie for, which is its charm.

North Chagrin, South Chagrin and Chagrin River Park reservations plus Todd Field and Daniels Park cover the river in public land: parking lots every few miles, trail access, and posted village stretches easy to avoid. It is the most civilized steelhead fishery imaginable: coffee shops five minutes from every pool. Crowds follow the reports: fish weekdays or walk between lots.

Slightly smaller runs, noticeably smaller crowds: east-siders keep it local. The winter pool fishing is as good as the alley offers.
