The long crik

Conneaut Creek winds nearly 60 miles through Ashtabula County and across the Pennsylvania line before dropping into Lake Erie at Conneaut harbor: the longest, coldest and arguably wildest of Ohio’s steelhead streams. Its length and shale-spring water hold fish better through winter than the flashier streams west of it, and its upper reaches double as Ohio’s only serious inland trout-stocked water: a two-season river wearing one name.

Where the fish hold

The lower creek (Conneaut township parks up through Farnham) collects fresh lake fish after every blow: float-fished spawn and jigs in the clay-green pools. The middle river around Amboy and Keefus Road offers the classic riffle-pool-gravel sequence: winter fish winter here in numbers other alley streams envy. Above the state line, Pennsylvania stretches add wild-feeling water with lighter pressure: licenses matter, carry the right one for the bank you stand on.

Two states, one run

Ohio and Pennsylvania share the creek without sharing rules: know whose water you are in (the line crosses near Route 7). Ohio water follows Lake Erie trout limits; Pennsylvania’s Erie-tributary rules differ in seasons and gear on some reaches. The fish do not check: pods push clear to Albion, PA on good water years.

Harbor to headwaters

Access: Conneaut Township Park at the mouth, Woodworth Road, Keefus Road, Amboy Road and Farnham Road bridges, plus PA game lands upstream. The creek clears slower than the Chagrin: give it an extra day after big rain, then enjoy the longest fishable windows in the alley. The harbor breakwall fishes for staging chrome in November and again at ice-out.
