A state-designated trout area

ODWC's designated trout water on the Blue River is a 6.25-mile stretch flowing through the Blue River Public Fishing and Hunting Area in Johnston County, reached by going four miles east of Tishomingo on State Highway 78 and six miles north. Trout are stocked from November 1 through March 31 of the following year. The area itself covers 3,367 acres of post oak and blackjack timber with scattered openings.

Catch-and-release water in winter

From November 1 through the end of February, the stretch from where the river enters the north side of the property to the end of the first walk-in trail is catch-and-release only, with barbless hooks and artificial flies and lures. Those special rules lapse on March 1. During trout season only one rod and reel per angler is allowed on the area; at other times two are allowed.

Limits and stringers

Statewide trout rules set a daily limit of three trout combined at designated trout areas, outside the catch-and-release portion of the Blue River, with no minimum size for rainbow or brown trout there. Trout on a stringer cannot be released later, and each angler needs a stringer marked with their own customer ID number. On the area, channel and blue catfish are limited to six combined a day, and crappie to six with no size limit.

Visiting the area

Bank and wading access runs throughout the area, and camping is allowed only at the Blue River Campground, which has special access for wheelchair users. No camping or vehicles are permitted outside designated parking in the Carl R. and Ruth Walker Landrum Wilderness and the Bill and Valerie Plaster Wildlife Management Unit. Nonresidents must check in and out when using certain ODWC public areas, and visitors who are not hunting or fishing need a Wildlife Conservation Passport or a current ODWC license.
