Fishing Blue River: the full guide

A river unlike its state

The Blue River flows about 141 miles through south-central Oklahoma to the Red River, and one reach of it is unlike anything else in the state: below the Blue River Public Fishing and Hunting Area near Tishomingo, the river runs over granite bedrock in ledges and pools, and Oklahoma stocks it with trout from November through March. Smallmouth bass hold it the rest of the year.

Winter trout

The trout season runs from November 1 through March 31, with regular stockings of rainbows drawing anglers from across Oklahoma and north Texas. The bedrock pools and ledges hold fish, taken on spinners, bait and flies. It is a put-and-take fishery, but the setting: granite ledges and clear water: makes it feel like somewhere else entirely.

Smallmouth in summer

Once the trout season closes, smallmouth bass, spotted bass and sunfish take over: light-tackle fishing in the same ledges and pools, largely uncontested. The river above and below the public area holds bass through the warm months, and the wading is straightforward in low summer flows.

Johnston County logistics

The Blue River Public Fishing and Hunting Area provides camping, parking and extensive walk-in access along the trout reach. Tishomingo is minutes away. Winter weekends draw crowds during stocking season; weekdays and the summer bass fishery offer solitude. Flows respond quickly to rain in the Arbuckle country.

Common questions

Trout in Oklahoma?

Seasonally: the state stocks the Blue River from November through March, creating a genuine winter trout fishery.

What about the rest of the year?

Smallmouth and spotted bass in the same bedrock ledges and pools, largely uncontested.

Is it crowded?

Winter weekends during stocking, yes. Weekdays and the summer bass season are quiet.
