Sooner Lake stays in its summer rhythm: early magic, midday siesta, evening reprieve. Today brings clear skies, wind S around 13 mph, rising pressure near 1010 hPa and a high of 98. Water sits around 84 F for the season (estimated). With the last quarter, the solunar majors run 5:39 AM-7:39 AM and 5:39 PM-7:39 PM: plan around them and beat the heat.

The plan, species by species

Hybrid striped bassFair

Schooling at first light over main-lake humps and channel edges. Slabs, tail spinners and live shad once you mark bait. It is usually over by mid-morning.

Catfish (blue, channel)Fair

Anchor on 20-30 ft baited holes with punch bait or cut shad. They keep biting through the heat when everything else quits.

Largemouth bassSlow

Topwater at first light on points and seawalls, then slide out to 12-25 ft brush and points with a Carolina rig, deep crank or drop shot. The bite is dawn, dusk or deep.

CrappieSlow

Straight down on bridge pilings and deep brush at 15-25 ft. Minnows outfish jigs in hot water; move until the graph shows them stacked.

Tomorrow: Similar at 100 F. The solunar majors shift about 50 minutes later.Next report: Sat, Sep 5, 6:30 AMHow this report is made →

Largemouth bass illustration

Largemouth bass

Best: spring and fall

The headline act on most American reservoirs. Relates to cover: docks, brush, grass edges and points. Topwater at first light on points and seawalls, then slide out to 12-25 ft brush and points with a Carolina rig, deep crank or drop shot. The bite is dawn, dusk or deep.

Hybrid striped bass illustration

Hybrid striped bass

Best: Jun-Sep

Stocked white bass x striper cross. Open-water shad chasers; birds and busting bait give them away. Schooling at first light over main-lake humps and channel edges. Slabs, tail spinners and live shad once you mark bait. It is usually over by mid-morning.

Catfish (blue, channel) illustration

Catfish (blue, channel)

Good year-round

The most reliable bite on most southern waters. Blues run big; channels fill the cooler. Anchor on 20-30 ft baited holes with punch bait or cut shad. They keep biting through the heat when everything else quits.

Crappie illustration

Crappie

Best: Nov-Mar

Brush piles, bridge pilings and standing timber. The fish fry favorite. Straight down on bridge pilings and deep brush at 15-25 ft. Minnows outfish jigs in hot water; move until the graph shows them stacked.

About this water

5,400 power-plant acres, Pawnee/Noble counties, OK. The prairie's warm-water winter fishery.

Fishing Sooner Lake: the full guide

The warm anomaly

Sooner cools an OG&E plant between Stillwater and Ponca City: its discharge keeps water moving and warm all winter, building Oklahoma's most dependable cold-month fishery: hybrids and stripers stacked in the plume while every natural lake sleeps.

The discharge doctrine

Winter is the season: live shad and slabs worked through the warm-water arm (the fish orient to the seam like a river), sailboats' summer breeze replaced by frost-brimmed livewells. Summer inverts it: fish the dam's deeper cool water at dawn and the discharge at night: the plant's rhythm is the lake's.

The bronze surprise

Sooner's riprap dikes hold Oklahoma's sleeper smallmouth fishery: wind-blown rock, craw-colored jigs and 3-4-pound bronze that most striper trailers idle past. Add channel cats on every flat and the odd walleye at the dam: the little lake fishes far past its acreage.

Prairie-plant practicalities

OG&E's public areas ramp both arms (fees modest): the wind is Oklahoma-honest: dike lees save the day: and the lake's baitfish balls make electronics the difference between a limit and a boat ride. Watch for posted plant-security zones near the intake.

Common questions

When is Sooner Lake best?

December-February at the discharge: hybrids in the warm seam while the state freezes. It is Oklahoma's most reliable winter bite, period.

Does Sooner really hold smallmouth?

The riprap dikes grow them quietly: 3-4-pound fish on jigs and jerkbaits. A two-species winter day (bronze at noon, hybrids at dusk) is the local special.

Can you bank fish Sooner Lake in winter?

Yes: the discharge-arm shorelines and dike rocks serve bank anglers the same warm-water hybrids the boats chase. Live shad or big slabs cast into the seam at dawn: dress for the prairie wind.

Is fishing good at Sooner Lake right now?
