The caldera east half

East Lake shares Newberry Volcano's caldera with Paulina: the eastern twin runs deeper into legend: Oregon's former record brown (over 22 pounds) came from these waters, and the recipe (kokanee and chub forage, cold volcanic depths) still simmers giants under the obsidian flows.

Hunting the browns

Dawn and dusk trolling with kokanee-imitating plugs along the drop-offs (the White Slide, the hot-springs shelf) is the trophy program: fall's pre-spawn aggression peaks it. Between hunts: rainbows and kokanee school mid-lake (dodgers at 20-40 ft), and the Atlantic salmon stockings add a novelty rise along the edges.

Caldera character

Hot springs seep along the southeast shore (fish congregate at the thermal edges in early season): obsidian flows drop straight into fishable water: and the 6,400-ft rim catches weather that flips fast. The lake fishes best May-July and October: August's algae dims the middle game.
