The BLM says the Rogue flows 215 miles from Crater Lake to the Pacific Ocean at Gold Beach and was one of the original eight rivers designated Wild and Scenic in 1968. The 84-mile Wild and Scenic portion, from seven miles west of Grants Pass to 11 miles east of Gold Beach, is managed jointly by the BLM and the Forest Service.

Runs ODFW tracks

ODFW counts coho, fall Chinook, late-run summer steelhead and half-pounder steelhead by beach seining near Huntley Park three times a week from mid-July through October. Its September 2026 report lists the lower river for Chinook, summer steelhead, half-pounders and hatchery coho, with no retention of wild coho, and the middle and upper river for steelhead and Chinook.

Hatchery returns

As of September 14, 2026, Cole Rivers Hatchery had counted 17,464 spring Chinook and 364 summer steelhead for the season. ODFW put the Lost Creek Reservoir release at about 1,030 cfs and 48.2 degrees in late September.

Floating the Wild section

About 20,000 people float the Wild section each year. From May 15 to October 15, launches are allocated by a Recreation.gov lottery that takes applications from December 1 to January 31; from October 16 to May 14, floaters fill out a self-issued permit at the Smullin Visitor Center or the Grave Creek boat launch.
