A river of runs

The Rogue built American steelhead literature: spring chinook in the canyons, summer steelhead through the famous middle stretch, and the "halfpounder" run: immature steelhead that flood the lower river each fall: found only here and on the Klamath. Drift boats and swung flies define it; the wild-and-scenic canyon rewards those who float in.

Spring salmon royalty

Rogue springers (March-June) are Oregon's prized meat fish: bank plunkers soak Spin-N-Glos at Gold Ray and TouVelle while boats back-bounce roe through the deep slots. The fish arrive ocean-bright with a fat content that justifies every hour of the soak.

Half-pounder autumns

The Rogue's signature run: immature summer steelhead ('half-pounders') flood the lower river August-October, eating swung flies with adult aggression. Between them and the fall chinook push, the Grants Pass-to-Agness reach becomes a drift-boat parade with fish for everyone.

What is a half-pounder?

A steelhead that returns after only months at sea: 12-18 inches, sexually immature, absurdly grabby. The Rogue and Klamath host the world's main runs: fly anglers plan years around it.

The permit-water wilderness

The Rogue's Wild section below Grave Creek (permit floats only) runs four roadless days of steelhead camps, black bears, and swung-fly half-pounders between whitewater drops. Lodges spaced a day apart serve rafts-and-rods traffic: the signature September trip books a year ahead. It is the rare fishery where the access system itself preserves the experience.

Do Rogue salmon eat flies?

Springers rarely: they are gear-and-bait fish in the cold heavy flows. Fall chinook and the half-pounder steelhead run are the fly game: swung comets and small speys in the tailouts.
