A river with a summer run

The Siletz River flows about 70 miles through the Oregon Coast Range to Siletz Bay near Lincoln City, and it is one of few Oregon coastal rivers with a genuine summer steelhead run. Those fish hold in the gorge above the town of Siletz through the warm months, joined by winter steelhead, fall chinook, coho and sea-run cutthroat.

Summer steelhead in the gorge

The upper river gorge holds summer fish from May through fall, reached by trail and requiring a walk: swung flies, small jigs and drifted bait in low, clear water. It is a genuinely different experience from the winter fishery, more like a Deschutes or Rogue trip in miniature, and the fish are willing when found.

Winter fish and salmon

Winter steelhead run from December through March in the classic pattern, with the river fishing best on the drop after rain. Fall chinook enter from September and hold in the tidewater and lower river. Sea-run cutthroat provide an overlooked late-summer fishery in the lower reaches on small spinners and flies.
