The lake, and why it fishes the way it does

Lake Conroe is a 21,000-acre reservoir on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River, impounded in 1973 and operated by the San Jacinto River Authority. The lower third, near the dam, is open water with bulkheaded shorelines, boat docks and rip-rap; the upper third reaches into the Sam Houston National Forest and still holds standing timber. That split personality is the key to the lake: manicured seawalls and brush piles down south, wild timber and creek mouths up north. Most of the natural cover was removed decades ago, so man-made brush piles do the heavy lifting: TPWD and local clubs sink hundreds of them on points and humps in 10 to 25 ft.

Season by season

Winter (Dec-Feb): crappie bunch up deep near bridge pilings and creek channels, and it is the best stretch of the year for a true giant largemouth. Spring (Feb-Apr): bass push into protected pockets and canals to spawn; sight-fishing around bulkheads is a Conroe specialty. Summer (Jun-Sep): dawn topwater, deep brush middays, schooling hybrids at first light, catfish always. Fall (Oct-Nov): shad slide into the creeks and the lake empties of traffic; some of the easiest catching of the year follows the bait.

No boat? You still have options

Lake Conroe Park and the FM 1097 bridge area give bank anglers real water: rip-rap, lighted areas and reachable brush. Several marinas rent slips, kayaks and pontoons, and the park piers produce catfish and crappie year-round, especially at night under lights.

Records, stocking and management

TPWD has stocked Florida-strain largemouth here since the 1980s and the lake has produced multiple 13-lb-plus ShareLunker entries; the lake record largemouth tops 15 lb. Hybrid striped bass are stocked annually. Bass must measure 16 inches, crappie 10; TPWD publishes current regulations and stocking history.

The honest part

Conroe sits an hour from Houston, and on summer weekends the wake boats own the lake from about 10 AM. Plan around it: the fishing day here starts before sunrise and ends by mid-morning, or restarts at dusk. Weekdays in fall and winter, you can have miles of it to yourself.
