The lake
Fitzroy Falls Reservoir lies on the Yarrunga Creek above the falls of the same name on the edge of the Southern Highlands escarpment, a Water NSW storage in the Shoalhaven transfer scheme that receives water from Tallowa and sends it on to Wingecarribee, with a picnic area and designated shore fishing areas near the dam. It is cool, open and shallow at the edges, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Australian bass are stocked and fish the edges and the weed in the warm months and the deeper water in winter, with no closed season in the reservoir; rainbow and brown trout are stocked and fish the cool months from the bank; golden perch have been stocked; redfin are common; and carp are present with the DPIRD release rules. The Shoalhaven and the highland streams below and around the lake carry their own closures, computed on their pages.
Where to fish it
The designated fishing areas along the foreshore near the dam and the picnic area are the only access, shore fishing with no boats, and they cover the drop-off and the weed edge where the bass and the trout feed at the change of light. The shallow arms are out of bounds and the water authority marks the limits.
