The reach
The Murrumbidgee at Gundagai runs below Burrinjuck and the Tumut junction through the town of the Dog on the Tuckerbox, under the historic Prince Alfred and railway bridges and past the flood plain that the 1852 flood made famous, a river of gravel bars, deep bends and willows between the hills of the South West Slopes. It is cod and perch water with a trout tributary in the Tumut, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Gundagai supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the deep bends, the snags and the bridge pylons through summer and autumn on lures and bait, closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule the species card computes; golden perch fish the same water from spring to autumn; trout come down the Tumut and are taken at the junction in the cool months; trout cod and Macquarie perch are protected and go back; and carp are present under the DPIRD rules.
Where to fish it
