The lake
Blowering Dam holds back the Tumut River south of Tumut in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, a long, narrow storage between timbered ridges that the Snowy Hydro scheme fills and Water NSW draws down for the irrigators of the Murrumbidgee. It is the rare New South Wales water where trout and the inland natives share a lake in numbers: rainbow and brown trout in the cold, deep water, Murray cod and golden perch along the drowned timber and the rock walls, redfin in the bays. The foreshore campsites and the ramps at the dam end and along the eastern shore make it a camping-and-boat lake, and the level shown on this page comes from the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam, with the time of the reading.
Species and seasons
The trout fish best from autumn through spring along the edges and the drop-offs, trolled and cast, and deep through summer; the cod are the summer and autumn fish among the timber, and Blowering is one of the two New South Wales storages the DPIRD rule exempts from the September to November cod closure, so the season chip on this page reads open all year. Golden perch fish the points and the timber from spring, redfin school in the bays through winter, and the river below the dam is a trout stream with the stream closure. Carp are present and the DPIRD rules on their release apply.
Reading the report
A rising lake in spring floods grass and scrub where the natives feed; a fast summer draw-down pulls everything to the points and the deep timber, and the 30-day chart shows which way it is going. The wind funnels down the valley and a northerly can turn the lake white in an hour, so read the wind row before launching a small boat. The water temperature is a seasonal estimate for a foothills storage, labelled as such, and it decides whether the day is a trout day on the edges or a cod day in the timber.

Can I catch trout and cod on the same day at Blowering?
In autumn and spring, yes: trout along the edges at first light and cod in the timber later in the day. Summer is the cod’s; winter is the trout’s.
