The reach
The Tumut at Tumut is the river as it leaves Blowering Dam and runs through the town at the foot of the Snowy Mountains, cold, clear and regulated by the dam’s release, past the river walk, the parks and the willows toward Gundagai and the Murrumbidgee. It is a trout tailwater with natives in it, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Tumut supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Rainbow and brown trout are the fish, in the runs, the pools and along the willows on bait, spinners and the fly, with the river a general trout stream under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card: open from the Saturday of the October long weekend to the Monday of the June long weekend and closed between. Murray cod and golden perch drop down from Blowering and hold in the deeper pools in summer, the cod under the September to November closure; and carp are present under the DPIRD rules.
Where to fish it
The river walk and the parks give bank access through the town, the bridges hold fish at the pool heads, and the reach below the Blowering wall, reached from the dam road, is the cold-water spot where the biggest trout sit; the runs and the willows downstream toward Gundagai fish on the fly when the release allows wading.
