The giant of the inland rivers and the big lakes (Hume, Mulwala, Eildon). A snag fish that eats big lures, and a species with a closed season across the Murray-Darling. Slow it down: heavier spinnerbaits, slow-rolled swimbaits and bait on the bottom next to the deep snags.
Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The lake
Burrinjuck Dam is the storage on the Murrumbidgee River south of Yass, a long, deep, branching lake in a gorge of the Southern Tablelands, with the Murrumbidgee, Goodradigbee and Yass arms, drowned timber in the shallower reaches, and the waters reserve and the ramps near the dam wall. It is a native fish lake first, golden perch and Murray cod, with redfin in the bays and the occasional trout in the cold arms, and its level swings with the irrigation year, rising through winter and spring and drawing down through summer. This page reads the storage level from the Bureau of Meteorology’s Water Data Online, with the date and time of the reading.
Species and seasons
Golden perch are the lake’s fish, from spring through autumn around the timber, the rock walls and the points on lures and bait; Murray cod fish the same timber in the warmer months, with the closed season from September to November that DPIRD publishes and this site links; redfin school in the bays and along the drop-offs all year and are the winter fish; and trout hold in the cold Goodradigbee arm in the cooler months. Carp are present and DPIRD has rules on their release; silver perch are protected in the wild and must go back.
