The reach
The Namoi at Gunnedah runs below Keepit Dam and the Peel junction through the Liverpool Plains town, a warm, slow river between red gums and black-soil flats with the town bridge, river parks and a caravan park on its banks and the plains stretching away either side. It is perch and cod water below the dam, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Gunnedah supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Golden perch are the fish, on the snags and the bends from spring to autumn; Murray cod fish the timber and the deep water through summer and autumn, closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule the species card computes; eel-tailed catfish feed in summer; silver perch are protected; and carp are numerous under the DPIRD rules. Keepit’s releases and the Peel’s flow from Chaffey shape the river.
Where to fish it
The river parks and the bridge give bank access at the town, the caravan park reach fishes at dusk, and a kayak covers the bends upstream toward the Peel junction and downstream toward Boggabri; the deep outside bends and the snags are the perch and cod water. Reading the report
The chart follows the Keepit releases with a delay, and a rise after rain brings the perch on; a low, hot river in a dry summer fishes at dawn and dusk. The Peel and the Mooki
Two rivers join the Namoi around Gunnedah: the Peel from Chaffey Dam and Tamworth, a cod and perch river in its own right with the dam’s cold releases in it, and the Mooki from the Liverpool Plains, slow and turbid; the junction of the Peel above the town is the classic spot when either river runs, and the perch move up the tributaries on a rise.
