The Namoi below Keepit
Below Keepit Dam, the Namoi River runs out of the dam’s outlet into the grazing country west of Gunnedah, a tailwater river whose flow depends on what the dam releases. Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Namoi below Keepit, the cod in the snags and deep holes, the yellowbelly in the warm months; carp are common, and freshwater catfish are protected in the rivers west of the Divide. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies to the river, even though some dams are exempt; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The access points below the dam and the crossings downstream give bank access to the Namoi. DPIRD closes waters close to dam walls, spillways and fishways, so check the closed-water rules before fishing near the outlet.
