Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The Namoi at Boggabri
Boggabri is the small town on the Namoi River between Gunnedah and Narrabri, where the river winds under river red gums across the black-soil plains, with the Nandewar Range to the north. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Boggabri supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Namoi at Gunnedah and Narrabri have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Namoi at Boggabri, cod in the snags and the deeper holes on lures and bait, yellowbelly in the warm months; carp are common, and freshwater catfish are protected west of the Divide. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The riverside reserve at Boggabri and the crossings up and downstream give access to the Namoi’s snags, and a kayak reaches the bends between them. Much of the river frontage is farmland.
Planning a visit
Boggabri is on the Kamilaroi Highway, with a pub, a store and camping, and Gunnedah and Narrabri have more. Bring cod lures and bait, and check releases from Keepit and Split Rock upstream.
The river through the year
The Namoi at Boggabri carries water released from Keepit Dam and, through its tributaries, from Split Rock and Chaffey dams, so through the warm months its level depends on irrigation deliveries as much as on rain, and the chart often shows the steps of a release rather than the curve of a natural rise. Heavy rain on the Liverpool Ranges and the New England slopes brings true floods that spill across the black-soil plains. Cod feed through summer and autumn in the snags and deep holes, and the New South Wales closure from 1 September to 30 November protects them while they breed in spring. Golden perch bite best on rising water in the heat of summer.
