The reach
The Namoi at Narrabri is the river of the north-west plains as it runs through the cotton town below Keepit, slow and warm between red gums and river flats, with the town bridges, river parks and a caravan park on its banks and the Nandewar Range and Mount Kaputar on the eastern skyline. It is perch and cod water of the plains kind, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Narrabri supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Golden perch are the fish, on the snags and the deep bends from spring to autumn, and they run when the river rises; Murray cod fish the timber and the bends through summer and autumn, closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card; eel-tailed catfish feed in the summer shallows; silver perch are protected; and carp are numerous under the DPIRD rules.
Where to fish it
The river parks and the bridges give bank access at the town, the caravan park reach fishes at dusk, and a kayak covers the bends upstream toward Boggabri and downstream toward Wee Waa; the deep outside bends and the timber are the perch and cod water, and a rise brings the perch onto the flooded edges. Reading the report
The chart follows the Keepit releases and the summer irrigation flow, and a rise after rain brings the perch on; a low, hot river in a dry summer fishes at dawn and dusk only.
